Operation Ocean Shield (Counter Piracy Operations)

  In this section of the NSC Web site, we have collected relevant information important for shipping in the area of operation - primarily the Horn of Africa.

The front page displays on its left side a presentation of main issues, while the right side contains a guide to the subpages and some useful links regarding counter piracy.

   

Counter Piracy Guidance Update – Inside Territorial Waters

Recent attacks on shipping within territorial waters are a reminder of the need to be alert for such activity at all times.   It is strongly recommended that all vessels maintain a high state of readiness and vigilance, implementing BMPs at all times throughout the High Risk Area.

 

 

 

Introduction

Operation Ocean Shield (OOS) is NATO's contribution to international efforts to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa.  As NATO's permanent point of contact with merchant shipping, the NATO Shipping Centre (NSC),plays an important role in the OOS.

Counter Piracy news

The NSC web site offers several useful tools/sources of information when it comes to enhance a safe voyage through the area where pirates are active.

Alert map:

The alertmap displays position, time and nature of the reported incidents.  The map is updated immediately after the appearance of an official alert.  Information put on the allertmap can be downloaded as an XML-file by clicking the RSS symbol, in the page.  See the Alertmap with RSS here ...

PAG (Piracy Attack Groups) map:

The PAG map is manually created, and shows areas with recent and confirmed piracy activity.  The PAG map is a jpg picture, and can be copied and used by CSOs etc.  See the latest PAG map here ..

The NSC publishes daily and weekly Piracy updates describing the latest assessments regarding piracy activity within the area.  See the latest updates here .....
