WARNING - Pirate Attack, Somali Basin (1102S,04657E)
At 151317 UTC MAR 10 a vessel was under attack by 2 skiffs in position 11 02S - 046 57E. Shots were fired.
MSCHOA advises all vessels navigating in the Indian Ocean to consider keeping East of 60E when routing North/South and to consider routing East of 60E and South of 10S when proceeding to and from ports in South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya.
Vessels are also advised not to approach closer than 100 miles from the position given in this report and maintain maximum CPA with any ship acting suspiciously.
While navigating in the region vessels are urged to operate at a heightened state of readiness, maintaining strict 24 hour anti-piracy visual and radar watches, actively implement recommended anti-piracy measures and regularly report their position/course/speed to UKMTO. Merchant vessels are requested to report any suspicious activity to UKMTO Dubai (+97 1505523215 – ukmto@eim.ae). Reports can also be relayed to MSCHOA (opscentre@mschoa.org).

At 140910 UTC MAR 10 a fishing vessel was approached by 1 motherskiff and skiffs in position 0303S-05508E .

At 112335 UTC MAR 10 a merchant vessel was under attack by pirates on 2-3 skiffs in position 03 32 S 062 11 E.
Possible mother vessel in position 03 28 S 062 20 E.

At position 07 18S – 048 06E on course 160 at 6kts a group of 3 skiffs has been spotted.
One logistical skiff is towing two smaller skiffs.
There are indications that these skiffs are used for piracy.

At 1246 UTC 08 MAR 10 a fishing beacon with anomalous movement in position 0140N 04706E, course 014, speed 8.25 kt
It is assessed that the beacon movement is linked to piracy.
08. Mar. 2010, Alert Update, Somali Basin (00 52N,046 56E)
At 0704 UTC 08 Mar 10 a fishing vessel FV SAKOBA, previously hijacked, was in position 00 52N 046 56E. The fishing vessel is used as a pirate platform and still poses a threat to mariners.
06 Mar. 2010, Suspicious Event, Somali Basin (06 18S,044 22E)
At 0300 UTC 06 MAR 10 a report of a fishing beacon with anomalous movement in position 06 18S 044 22E moving at course 020, speed 8.5 knots.
It is assessed that the beacon movement is linked to piracy.

three recent incidents reported to imb piracy reporting centre which indicates somali pirates are attacking vessels off eastern african coast.
1. 05.03.2010: 0639 utc : 04:34s - 048:09e: off kenya.
a vessel was under attack by two skiffs and one mother ship.
2. 05.03.2010: 0535 utc: 08:53s - 043:23e: off tanzania.
suspected somalia pirates attacked a tanker in above position and it is suspected the tanker may have been hijacked at this location.
3. 05.03.2010: 0902 utc : 02:59s - 045:50e: off kenya. A fishing vessel was under attack by a skiff.

05. Mar.2010 Somali Basin, at 0924 UTC a fishing vessel was under attack by 4 skiffs in position 0321S-04532E .

The centre received confirmation from the operators of the vessel “MT AL NISR AL SAUDI” that the vessel has been taken by Somali pirates on 01 March 2010 at the Gulf of Aden.
In early afternoon of 02 MAR 10 a merchant vessel has been pirated in vicinity of Aden.
All vessels navigating in the Indian Ocean are advised to consider keeping East of 60E when routing North/South and to consider routing East of 60E and South of 10S when proceeding to and from ports in South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya.
While navigating in the region vessels are urged to operate at a heightened state of readiness, maintaining strict 24 hour anti-piracy visual and radar watches, actively implement recommended anti-piracy measures and regularly report their position/course/speed to UKMTO (+97 1505523215 – ukmto@eim.ae).
Further information can be found on www.mschoa.org Vessels are requested to report to UKMTO on entering the UKMTO Voluntary Reporting Area (VRA) bounded by 78E and 10S and upon exiting the Suez Canal Southbound. Thereafter vessels should report their PCS daily.
Throughout the VRA vessels should implement Self Protective, (defensive) measures in accordance with Best Management Practices. Upon receiving a vessels initial report UKMTO shall replay giving specific threat guidance relevant at the time.
Vessels should note that experience has shown that to transit W of 60E or within 600nm of Somali Coast significantly increases the risk of piracy, although attacks have and will occur E of these positions.
